Colwin Way: Woodturner

Lyme Regis, Dorset

"Having developed an interest in woodturning at school, Colwin took advantage of the opportunity to spend his final year's work experience placement at a local woodturning workshop. During this time he learnt the rudiments of woodturning in a commercial environment, gaining a wide ranging experience not only in the skills and techniques of woodturning but in his knowledge of tool technology and grinding. On leaving school, Colwin returned to the same company to serve a five year apprenticeship, turning up to 20 bowls, 45 vases or 100 lace bobbins a day. On finishing his apprenticeship, Colwin started up on his own, designing and turning for galleries, craft shops and other outlets. Having established his reputation as a foremost woodturner, he was immediately in demand as a demonstrator and tutor and through this began his association with Axminster Power Tool Centre, taking over the development and running of the woodturning courses. Colwin has demonstrated and taught on behalf of Axminster both in the UK, France and as far away as Norway, teaching in his own enthusiastic style, introducing and encouraging a wide diversity of people, of all ages, to the skills and pleasures of woodturning."
